His remarks follow a series of attacks on families in their homes, especially in the Vhembe and Mopani districts.

"And I'm calling on members of the community, let's stand firm and be vigilant, work with the police."

On Wednesday, a 67-year-old man was stabbed to death, and his wife was injured, by suspects who broke into their home in Thohoyandou.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple arrived home in the evening from a church service and found an unknown number of male suspects busy breaking inside the house and were immediately attacked and severely assaulted," said police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba.

In another incident last week Tuesday, two unknown suspects tied up a 43-year-old man before gunning down his son and sexually assaulting his 17-year-old daughter in Malamulele.

In Mopani, a group of armed suspects targeted seven homes in Hoveni village outside Tzaneen between Friday and Saturday.

According to Ledwaba, the suspects demanded money and valuables from their victims and committed serious crimes including multiple counts of rape involving minors.

No arrests have been made.

On Friday, the director-general of the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service, Smike Sibuya and provincial police commissioner Thembi Hadebe hosted a crime prevention engagement with residents of Thohoyandou.
