Mabaso reportedly committed suicide in a Cape Town holding cell earlier this month.

He had been transported from the Krugersdorp prison, where he was initially held, to Cape Town prior to his death-  as the police sought information tha Mabaso said could help solve the case.

The 27-year Mabaso, together with 61-year old Fika Khupe, allegedly murdered three women and four children, whose bodies were found in a pile of sand in two separate rooms of the family’s house in Vlakfontein last year.

Mabaso was due to give evidence against Khupe, claiming that he had ordered the hit on the family.

The NPA in Gauteng’s spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, says the family has yet to identify the body.

"The family still has to go to Cape Town to identify the body so the death certificate can be released, but the police have indicated in court that they will be assisting the family to acquire such."

Meanwhile, the co-accused appeared at the Protea Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for bail application.

"The case has been postponed for judgement which is expected to be delivered on February 4."
