The 58-year-old politician passed away early Tuesday morning after a long illness.

Mentor, who was a former ANC MP, became one of the first whistleblowers on state capture.

In 2018, she was also one of the first to give testimony at the commission of inquiry into state capture on how she was allegedly offered a cabinet post as public enterprises minister by the Gupta family at their Saxonwold compound in Johannesburg.

However, the commission found in its report that Mentor was not offered the position.

"Vytjie had been ill for some time and this morning her family called to inform us that she had succumbed to her illness after being hospitalised for several months. It should not be forgotten that Vytjie Mentor was the first to sound the alarm on what we today call ‘state capture’,” says ActionSA spokesperson Lerato Ngobeni.

ActionSA national chairperson John Moodey believes Mentor's impact in the fight against large-scale corruption should not be underestimated.

"I have learned to understand what it means to be a patriot, to stand up against intimidation and threats on your life to put her people and her country first at the cost of her family."
