This action occurred during the fourth stop of the Tshwane Ya Tima campaign, a debt recovery initiative that involves cutting off electricity and other services for customers who fail to pay municipal bills.

The campaign is part of efforts to address the city’s R30 billion debt crisis and stabilize its finances.

In its reaction, the Gauteng Department of Health confirmed later on Monday that the processing of the R1.2 million owed for March and April electricity consumption was already underway when the municipality disconnected the hospital.

The delay in payment was attributed to the transition to the new financial year.

However, the department noted that Weskoppies Hospital typically makes additional payments to ensure uninterrupted electricity, which was impossible this time.

Despite the disconnection, the department assured that the hospital's backup power systems, including five generators and a solar system, are fully operational to ensure uninterrupted patient care while the electricity supply is restored.

“The Department is currently engaging with the City of Tshwane as we maintain our commitment to settle municipal accounts,” said Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba.

As of Monday, the Gauteng Health Department had already paid R3.8 million to the City of Tshwane for other facilities.

Meanwhile, the City of Tshwane continues to offer a debt rehabilitation programme that provides up to a 70% write-off on older debts for residents who settle their outstanding rates and taxes.
