Machitje’s body was discovered in an open field in Bekkersdal, Westonaria, more than a week after he had been reported missing.

It’s alleged he was hijacked in the Vaal area on Monday last week after he left home to travel to the Eastern Cape.

“He was a Deputy Director responsible for management accounting in the Water Trading Entity of the DWS. On the day of his disappearance, he was traveling to the Eastern Cape on a work assignment,” reads the statement from DWS.

The department has called on authorities to bring Machitje’s killers to book: “DWS conveys its condolences to his family and loved ones, as well as the colleagues in the Department, and further urges law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in finding those responsible for this heinous deed.”

Machitje’s stolen bakkie was recovered in Alexandra, and a suspect has been arrested for possessing the stolen vehicle.

Police say the investigation to determine whether the suspect can be linked to Machitje’s murder is continuing.
