[WEATHER] It's winter solstice - the shortest day and the longest night

The South African Weather Service says Thursday marks the shortest day and longest night of the year.


Pretoria will have day light of 10 hours and 31 minutes, Bloemfontein 10 hours and 16 minutes and Cape Town will be lit for 9 hours and 53 minutes.


The weather bureau also issued a warning for extremely high fire danger conditions expected over the northern interior of the Eastern Cape.


Gauteng: Fine and cool.

Mpumalanga: Partly cloudy in the east with morning fog patches along the escarpment, otherwise fine and cool but warm over the lowveld.

Limpopo: Partly cloudy in the east with morning fog patches, otherwise fine and cool to warm.

North West: Fine and cool to warm.

Free State: Fine and cool.

Northern Cape: Fog along the coast in the morning, otherwise fine and cool. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to south-westerly, becoming fresh north-westerly in the south from late morning.

Western Cape: Fine and cool but becoming partly cloudy to cloudy in the south west with evening rain. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly along the south coast at first, otherwise moderate to fresh westerly to north-westerly, becoming strong along the south west coast from the late morning.

Eastern Cape: Fine and cool. The wind along the coast will be light northerly becoming moderate south westerly in the afternoon.


KwaZulu-Natal: Partly cloudy at first with morning fog over the interior, otherwise fine and warm but cool in places in the west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly.
