Western Cape's Melissa Muller named 2023 top achiever

Melissa Muller from Rhenish High School in the Western Cape has been named the Class of 2023’s top achiever at public schools.

She was among the 34 pupils hosted by Minister Angie Motsekga for the congratulatory breakfast on Thursday morning and the official result announcement in the evening.


Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the overall results in Gauteng.


The Free State was once again the top achieving province with an 89.3% overall pass rate, while Limpopo showed the most improvement with a 7.4% increase.


KZN came in second with a pass rate of 86.36%. The minister hailed the country’s Basic Education system, saying it has improved steadily since 1994.


Speaking to Jacaranda FM news, Muller said she plans to study Mechatronics Engineering at the University of  Stellenbosch.


She has advised the matrics of 2024 to develop a steady work ethic.


"I don't know if there is a set recipe. I think its hard work over many years developing a good work ethic, working consistently.


"Use the resources at your disposal; your teachers, friends and family is there as a support system; ask for help when you need it."
