Wolmer Substation trip leaves parts of Tshwane dark

Parts of Wolmer, Hesteapark and surrounding areas are without power following an explosion on panel A1 at the Wolmer 132/11kV Substation.

The explosion occurred on Monday afternoon.

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services said on arrival, a power cable supplying the transformer was sparking and emitting smoke.

"Fire and rescue resources were dispatched from the Rosslyn Fire Station and Wonderboom Fire Station. Upon arrival, firefighters found that the Crews acted swiftly, using a Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) fire extinguisher to safely extinguish the sparking cable", said Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Tebogo Maake.

"Firefighters then continued to cool down the surrounding cables to prevent the risk of reignition. No injuries were reported, and the scene was secured to prevent further hazards."

The city's technical teams are on-site conducting damage assessments to effect the required repairs.

Wolmer, Theresapark, Heatherdale, Ninapark, Eldorette, Clarina, Winternest, Hesteapark, Klerksoord (industrial and residential), Heatherview and Dorandia areas remain without power.

No estimated time of restoration has been confirmed.
