Woman photographed in cage speaks out

The woman photographed sitting in a cage at the back of a bakkie, insists it was her decision.

Bakkie cage

Linda Steenekamp (27) says she chose to sit at the back of the bakkie as it was "too hot" to sit in the vehicle.

The photographed has sparked outrage on social media.

"The back of the bakkie was cooler than the front of the vehicle, which is why I chose to sit at the back", Steenekamp says. "If there was enough space at the back, then I wouldn't have sat in the cage but next to it."

Owner of the bakkie, Johan Erasmus says he had given Steenekamp a lift to the clinic in town.

"She said she was hot and got into the cage at the back of the bakkie."

When asked whether there was space next to the cage for her to sit, he responded saying: "It was safer in the cage, than next to the cage."

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has also added its voice to the issue.

SAHRC Spokesperson Gail Smith says the matter has been escalated to the commission's Eastern Cape provincial head for further investigations, following several complaints.
