Mining giant Steve Phiri remembers late veteran broadcaster Xolani Gwala as “a humble giant” during a memorial service held in Sandton on Wednesday.

Friends and family bid farewell to the late SABC and 702 presenter at the first of two memorial services to be held in his honour.
Gwala lost his two-year battle with colon cancer at the age of 44 on Friday.

“Xolani not only knew my father, he knew where he came from, he knew his children.”
Phiri recounted the first time he met Gwala.
“The first time I met Xolani, I knew what a remarkable man he was. Instantly he made such a great impression that confirmed all my expectations about him before meeting him, a pleasant, witty and perceptive person, a humble giant,” said Phiri.
