Zanzou operating 'illegally' as night club - Tshwane
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The City of Tshwane on Tuesday confirmed that the Zanzou nightclub had been operating illegally as a nightclub.

Zanzou has since been closed by police after videos of torture at the establishment emerged on social media.
City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the club was zoned as a Category 1 business for refreshments and not a nightclub.
"The property in question has been zoned as Business 1, which means that it has been zoned as a place of refreshment, not a nightclub.
"In 2022, we received a complaint that there was a contravention of the city's bylaws and that the establishment was being used for reasons which they were not zoned for.
"Our building inspectors went there, and they found that, indeed, this was the case."
Bokaba said in August 2022, the metro received a complaint about the Zanzou nightclub operating illegally.
The place was with notice to comply.
In October of the same year, the city officials went back to the establishment to check compliance and found that Zanzou was compliant.
Bokaba admitted that it is difficult to check regular compliance periodically with so many establishments registered in the city.
"Can you imagine that the city has got seven regions, and all these regions have got places of entertainment, and they come and make an application, the owners of this establishment?
"So, you cannot do all of these things overnight, you are working with limited personnel, and there's quite a lot of ground to carve."
