Zikalala: Weddings, funerals to blame for jump in Covid-19 cases in KZN

Zikalala briefed the media on the latest Covid-19 statistics on Sunday.

He said the province has 23 751 confirmed cases, 289 deaths and 6 021 recoveries

"A week ago we had 13 984 cases of which 9665 were active, 182 deaths and 4 197 recoveries.

"There for this means in just one week we had 9 767 new Covid-19 cases.”

Zikalala believes the continuous gatherings for weddings and funerals is at least partly to blame for the increase in infections.

"In the past week we have made aware a sizeable group was reported to have attended a wedding last weekend. In the end, the number of people from that wedding fell sick.

"And 25 from the group who attended the wedding tested positive and today some of them are occupying the beds in Covid-19 facilities."
