Aggrey Mojanaga, 43, was sentenced in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court to three years imprisonment during which he must stay behind bars for six months.
The report said Magistrate Johannes Moeng ordered that Mojanaga could be released under correctional supervision after six months if his behaviour justified it.
Mojanaga deliberately hit a homeless man, Isaac Moalahi, 51, with his taxi and then kicked him against the head in Andries Pretorius Street in March this year.
Video material of the incident, which was captured on security cameras, was broadcast all over the Internet.
