Malema testified in the hate speech case brought by lobby group AfriForum in the Equality Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Afriforum maintains the song constitutes hate speech and leads to an increase in farm murders and attacks.

The case dates to more than 10 years when Malema was still the president of the ANC Youth League.

“Peter Mokaba sung the song many times before 1994 and Mokaba has long died, and farmers are still being killed today,” said Malema.

“Why are farmers being killed today? It is not exclusively farmers, there is a problem of violent crime in South Africa.”

Malema said the song's words shouldn't be taken literally but should be understood in the context of political gatherings.

The trial continues.
