When you think of a place that would generate such an astonishing amount in traffic fines, one of the big cities likely comes to mind first.

But surprisingly, the area responsible for this figure is not a city — it's actually an airport.

According to MyBroadband, OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa has issued over R19.52 million in fines over the past five financial years.

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi revealed this figure, stating that from 2019/20 to 2023/24, R19,524,244.21 in fines were generated.

This information was disclosed in response to a parliamentary question from the DA’s Mathew Cuthbert.

The 2019/20 financial year saw the highest amount of fines, with R8.78 million, followed by 2021/22 with R4.05 million.

Most common traffic offences in South Africa

According to the Automobile Association (AA), the top three most common traffic offences in South Africa are:

  • Speeding
  • Ignoring stop signs and traffic lights
  • Using mobile phones while driving

Other top offences include:

  • Not wearing seat belts
  • Driving under the influence
  • Reckless and negligent driving
  • Illegal parking
  • Driving without a valid licence
