"To represent South Africa in any way whatsoever, it feels surreal," he added.

"I mean, we're a small country with a lot of struggles. To have something like this—I know it means a lot to my people."

According toĀ SA Rugby Magazine, the 30-year-old, who weighs 148 kg, managed to snatch the title from defending champion Tom Stoltman.

Nel won by just half a point in the two-day final.

The rugby player-turned-strongman was the captain of the CUT rugby team before being called up to join the Cheetahs.

SA Rugby Magazine reports that Nel only started proper strongman training in 2022 and also works as an electrical engineer.
