This is how much cruise ship captains really earn
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Ever wondered how much you would earn if you were the captain of a ship?

Being a cruise ship captain comes with a long list of responsibilities and requires significant management skills.
Ensuring the safety of thousands of people, planning routes, handling cargo, and maintaining constant oversight of crew members and passengers is no small feat.
But how much would one earn carrying all that responsibility?

According to Mad About Cruises, salaries for captains vary significantly depending on various factors.
Captains who are just starting out are expected to earn around $50,000 (around R900,000) a year.
This might not seem like much, but once a captain is experienced, this amount could be much higher.
An experienced captain who has been working for years can earn up to $400,000 (R7.2 million) if bonuses are also included.
But according to Mad About Cruises, the average salary of a cruise ship captain is about $92,000–$96,000 (between R1.6 million and R1.7 million) annually.

Like most jobs, the longer a captain works and the more experience they gain, the more they earn.
Factors like the size of the ship and the location of a captain's home port also have an impact on how much they earn.
