Human Biltong Kiosk has SA residents in shock

Many tourists and even some South African residents have been shocked to discover the Human Biltong Kiosk.

In South Africa, with its many languages and cultures, it’s easy to get lost in translation.

The latest example of this language barrier left some South Africans in shock, while others were in stitches with laughter.

Pieter and Annetjie Human's 'Human Biltong Kiosk' in Lephalale has had people doing double-takes.

Although they don't specifically cater to tourists, the couple says that many visitors have nearly lost it over the name.

But no, they don't sell biltong made from humans.

The kiosk is simply named after their Afrikaans surname, Human (pronounced "he-mun").

"My wife Annetjie and I opened the kiosk 25 years ago. We never even thought the name would create a fuss—it was just our surname," the 84-year-old Pieter Human told TimesLIVE Premium.

"We are situated near the Hi-Q filling station. It's on the road leaving town to the north, towards Polokwane and Botswana. If you stand at the station, you’ll see our sign. Across the road from us, there is a curio shop that's part of some kind of tourism route."

"You should see the Americans who visit the curio shop. Their eyes nearly pop out. Every one of them gets out of the Kombi, stretches, and glances across the road in our direction. Then their eyes go wide, and they grab their camera bags. They always use long lenses to take pictures of the sign—too scared to come any closer," he said.

Human hilariously added that no "humans" or "Humans" are harmed in the making of their tasty biltong.

"We sell yellow fat biltong, liver sausage, boerewors, chilli bites, dry wors, biltong sticks, and many other delicious dried meat products," Human said.

He also told TimesLIVE Premium that some tourists are even too scared to enter the shop.

"But some do. I had a tourist come in and ask if we really made human biltong. I joked and said yes. Then he pointed to his shin and asked if I could use it. I told him the shin wouldn't make very nice biltong—and we both laughed before he left with some of the real stuff."

After the initial report was shared on Facebook, South African users had some hilarious reactions:

"When driving that side, don't take a 'Wrong Turn.' You might end up eating human biltong," said one user.

"My eyes almost popped when reading the headline, only to realise two seconds later that the couple's surname is Human—and they sell biltong. Their shop name is Human’s Biltong," said another.
