After 28 years of bringing entertainment to millions of South Africans, the iconic soapie 'Muvhango' is calling it quits.

SABC2 and Word of Mouth Productions announced the soapie's departure earlier this year, but now the final episode is almost upon us.

The last episode of 'Muvhango' is set to air on Friday, 8 August at 9 pm.

According to TimesLive, the popular soapie could possibly be replaced by Pimville Queens, which will air from 11 August at 9 pm.

Muvhango made its debut on SABC2 on 7 April 1997, and now, 28 years later, fans will have to say goodbye.

As South Africa was transitioning into a democracy, most vernacular dramas were only available in majority dialects.

Tshivenda was seen as a minority language, and Muvhango put the language and its culture under the spotlight.

"Muvhango gave an opportunity to an ignored language that has become one of the most celebrated languages in South Africa now. It has been a privilege and an honour to create moments on television, where marginalised languages were at the centre of it all," said Muvhango creator and executive producer Duma ka Ndlovu.

Muvhango recently shared an emotional video on its official social media accounts.

The emotional farewell video shows the show’s Royal Sons reflecting on the soapie as they shoot their final scenes.

"As they say their final goodbyes, the Royal Sons reflect on the incredible journey they’ve shared and the unwavering support from all of you."
