Residents have been warned to remain vigilant after a mother hippo and her calf were spotted in Kempton Park.

No matter how cute they are, hippos are not your friends. That’s why residents have been warned after a mother hippo and her calf were spotted in Kempton Park.
According to Kempton Express, the animals were seen on a farm behind the Hartebeestfontein Water Care Works, located on ERWAT property.

Residents in the area have been warned to remain vigilant and to refrain from approaching or attempting to photograph the animals.
They have also been asked to report any additional sightings to local authorities.
It is believed the animals entered the area through the wetland and river system connected to the ERWAT (Ekurhuleni Water Care Company) property.
ERWAT issued a public safety alert reminding people of how dangerous hippos can be, especially when protecting their young. They are also extremely territorial animals.

"For your safety, we urge all ERWAT staff and members of the public to stay away from the affected area," the statement read.
Wildlife services have reportedly been arranged to safely capture and relocate the animals to a secure farm in Gauteng.
