The African Transformation Movement (ATM) and several other political parties are hoping to bring a name change for South Africa to the table.

According to BusinessTech, ATM is preparing to take a proposal to Parliament and the Constitutional Review Committee to officially rename the country to the Republic of Azania.

According to ATM president and parliamentary leader Vuyo Zungula, the name "South Africa" is rooted in colonial history and does not reflect the true identity of the country's people.

"Before 1652, there was no South Africa. The term was introduced when British and Boer forces formed the Union of South Africa, an institution designed to entrench colonial rule," said Zungula.

He believes that renaming the country is a necessary step toward reclaiming national pride and restoring cultural heritage.

"Other countries have done it. Take South West Africa, for example. It is now Namibia. We should not have to cling to a name given to us by colonisers," Zungula added.

But not everyone agrees.

Political analyst Kenneth Mokgatlhe has questioned the move, saying that "South Africa" is simply a geographic label, similar to countries like South Sudan, North Macedonia, and the Central African Republic.

Mokgatlhe also raised concerns about the term "Azania," arguing that it is not widely recognised by most South Africans and is mainly used in academic or radical political circles.

"The name lacks strong historical or cultural ties to the people of this country. It may sound symbolic, but it does not necessarily speak to our broader national identity," he said.

While the idea is likely to stir strong opinions, it is clear that the conversation around identity, history, and national pride is far from over.
