Here are the 10 traffic violations that are most common in South Africa...

South African roads already feel like a wild adventure, given the number of potholes and non-functioning traffic lights.
This, combined with reckless and distracted driving, has led to the country experiencing its fair share of road rage and traffic violations.

According to TopAuto, millions of traffic fines are issued in South Africa annually, ranging from minor offences to extremely dangerous violations.
The Automobile Association (AA) recently published a list of the top 10 most common traffic infringements in South Africa.
Here are the 10 most common traffic fines in SA:
1. Speeding
Speeding endangers all road users by reducing reaction times and increasing the severity of crashes. The AA advises motorists to stick to posted speed limits and use cruise control where possible. Plan ahead to avoid the temptation to rush. Fines are typically around R1,000 but can be higher depending on how much the speed limit is exceeded.
2. Ignoring Stop Signs and Traffic Lights
Failing to stop at red lights or stop signs can cause serious, often fatal, collisions—even if the road looks clear. Always slow down when approaching intersections and obey all traffic signals without exception. Fines can be around R2,000, depending on the municipality.
3. Using a Cell Phone While Driving
Mobile phones are a major distraction, and using one while driving dramatically increases your crash risk. Use hands-free technology or pull over safely to take calls. Many modern cars support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Motorists could be fined R1,000, and police may confiscate your phone. A release fee of another R1,000 may apply.
4. Not Wearing a Seatbelt
Seatbelts save lives, yet many South African passengers neglect to use them, especially in the back seat. Ensure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up before moving. It’s a legal and life-saving requirement. Fines of R250 are issued per unbelted occupant in the vehicle.

5. Illegal Parking
Illegal parking obstructs traffic flow and emergency access, and endangers pedestrians. The AA says motorists should only park in designated areas and avoid restricted zones such as loading bays or disabled parking spots. Fines of approximately R500 are often issued as a Section 341/Schedule 3 offence.
6. Overloading a Vehicle
Overloading stresses your vehicle, reduces braking efficiency, and can lead to tyre blowouts and loss of control. Motorists are advised not to exceed the legal passenger or cargo limits of their vehicles. Fines range from R250 to R1,500, depending on the extent of the overloading.
7. Failing to Yield to Pedestrians
Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users. Failing to yield puts lives at risk. Always give right of way at pedestrian crossings and drive cautiously in areas with foot traffic.
8. Driving Without a Valid Licence or an Expired Vehicle Licence Disc
Driving without valid documentation is illegal and prevents authorities from verifying roadworthiness. Keep your driver's licence and vehicle licence disc up to date. If affected by renewal backlogs, carry proof of renewal (like a payment receipt).
9. Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs—even prescription medication—is one of the deadliest choices a driver can make. Motorists should never drive after consuming substances that impair their ability to operate a vehicle safely. Offenders may face fines from R2,000 to R120,000, up to six years in jail, licence suspension, and a criminal record.
10. Reckless and Negligent Driving
Aggressive behaviours like tailgating or weaving through traffic significantly increase crash risk. Stay calm behind the wheel, follow road rules, and keep a safe following distance at all times. Fines vary from R10,000 to R40,000 and may result in licence suspension or imprisonment.
