Volkswagen first launched the Touareg in 2002 alongside the Porsche Cayenne.

Both cars served a specific purpose for their respective brands, as the Cayenne helped Porsche enter the SUV market.

The Touareg also fulfilled Volkswagen's ambition of entering the luxury car market with upmarket models.

According to Autocar, discontinuing the Touareg is part of the car brand’s strategic shift in priorities.

This shift includes Volkswagen's attempt to move away from upmarket vehicles to focus on higher-volume models like the Tiguan and the newly introduced Tayron.

Both of these cars offer greater appeal to consumers as they come at lower costs but provide many of the benefits of the Touareg.

The Tayron, specifically, now fulfils much of the Touareg's role.

According to insider reports, the departure of the Touareg marks the famous car brand’s retreat from competing with other luxury SUVs like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi Q7.

Audi and Porsche, which are also owned by the Volkswagen Group, will continue to appeal to the brand's luxury buyers.

This shift will enable the group to focus on higher-volume sales for Volkswagen, which in turn will result in greater profitability.
