Warning over new job scam circulating on social media

The Tshwane Metro has issued a warning regarding a fake job advertisement circulating online.

The City of Tshwane is urging residents to stay alert after a bogus job advert began making the rounds online, falsely claiming that a truck driver position is available.
According to Pretoria Rekord, the scam surfaced online, falsely advertising a vacancy in the Region 6 Environmental Management Division.

City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo stated that the post is entirely misleading.
"The fraudulent message claims that the City is seeking a physically fit truck driver to operate specialised machinery such as mechanical stump grinders and chippers, purportedly to maintain trees and green infrastructure in municipal spaces like road reserves, parks, and traffic islands," he explained.
Mashigo emphasised that residents should exercise caution and disregard any messages that do not come from the City's official communication channels.
"We urge residents to remain vigilant and not fall victim to these fraudulent schemes. The City will not hesitate to take legal action against individuals found to be spreading false information or attempting to exploit vulnerable job seekers," he warned.

He made it clear that the job advertisement is fake and did not originate from the City.
"The City does not advertise jobs through social media or messaging platforms. All legitimate job vacancies are posted in newspapers and on the City's official website (www.tshwane.gov.za), specifically under the Job Forum and E-Recruitment portals," Mashigo added.
If you come across any suspicious job ads, the City requests that you report them to the Tshwane Metro Police Department immediately by calling 012 358 7095/6 for further investigation.
