WATCH: The unexpected link between screens and ageing

Recent research is highlighting concerns about long-term exposure to artificial blue light.

Phone and laptop screens are giving our faces a different kind of glow, one that's not good for us.

Blue light, often referred to as High‑Energy Visible (HEV) light, lies within the visible spectrum and is naturally produced by the sun. 

According to IOL, artificial sources have dramatically increased our overall exposure. Unlike UV rays, which predominantly affect the skin’s surface, HEV light penetrates deeper into our skin's layers, impacting collagen and elastin layers. This triggers oxidative stress, inflammation, and accelerated ageing.

Blue light from screens doesn’t burn like UV, but it can speed up aging, increase pigmentation, and weaken your skin’s barrier over time

So what are the skin concerns associated with blue light?

So, how can you protect your skin from excessive blue light over exposure?

The good news is you don’t have to give up screens, because that would be impossible in the world we live in.

  1. Take Frequent Breaks

    Follow the 20‑20‑20 rule: every 20 minutes, gaze at something about 20 ft away for 20 seconds. This gives your eyes and skin a brief reprieve (dermatologyseattle.com, Allure, IOL).

  2. Enable Blue Light Filters
    Use built-in “Night Mode” or blue light settings on your phone or laptop to soften screen glow and reduce emission intensity during evening hours 

  3. Use Antioxidant-Rich Skincare
    Look for Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and ferulic acid serums to fight oxidation. 

  4. Apply Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Indoors
    Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, particularly when tinted with iron oxides, help block visible light.

  5. Adjust Lighting Environment
    Opt for warm LED bulbs with a lower blue-light output at home.
