Water leak leads to new sinkhole in popular suburb

This is only one of many sinkholes that have formed in the area…

Concerns over sinkholes continue to grow among residents following the latest sinkhole that has formed on Jade Avenue in Lyttelton Manor.
According to Pretoria Rekord, the sinkhole has left part of the suburb without water.
Freedom Front Plus PR Councillor, Wesley Jacobs confirmed to the outlet that the hole formed on a resident's property on Sunday, 20 July.

Jacobs confirmed that the water leak that caused the sinkhole had been reported.

He said the sinkhole was first discovered by a team from the metro’s Department of Water and Sanitation.
"The sinkhole was discovered by the team around 9 pm while they were attending to the reported water leak. The area was immediately barricaded with tape and water barriers to secure the site."
Jacobs told Pretoria Herald that this is the 64th sinkhole to form in Centurion, and the city’s geologist will declare it as such following an investigation from the Regional Operations Centre.
"There were no visible signs that a sinkhole was forming. If there had been any, we would never have allowed city personnel to work on the site. The ground gave in shortly after the leak was repaired."

"Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine how long a leak has been occurring beneath the surface until it reveals itself. Only technical investigations after the fact can provide those answers."
"If that section is found to be unsafe, it will be blocked off. Residents can then make use of Saffier Road and Robyn Road to enter and exit Jade Avenue."
According to Ward 57 Councillor David Farquharson, the water leak where the sinkhole formed was reported at 5:43pm on Sunday, only an hour before the collapse.
