In the last few years, no must-have item has been as popular as the air fryer. (That's excluding Labubus.)

One day, you were happy with your stove; the next thing you know, everyone and their mother hopped on the air fryer train.

Air fryers can be a healthier option when you want something deep-fried but without the oil; they're faster and more energy efficient than most ovens.

So it's no surprise that chefs, cooks, and anyone looking to share a recipe have found ways to use an air fryer to cook almost any dish, not just nuggets.

However, while it might seem like the all-in-one ultimate cooking machine, there are certain restrictions.

Here is a list of 10 foods you should not be putting in your air fryer:

1. Popcorn kernels

While it might seem like a good idea, popcorn kernels belong on the stovetop or in a popcorn maker. Most air fryers do not get hot enough to pop kermels effectively, and one slipping into the heating element can cause smoke, damage or fires.

2. Rice, pasta, other dry grains

Although seemingly straightforward, these foods require water to cook, which is not provided by an air fryer. Without sufficient moisture, these ingredients will remain undercooked and dry.

3. Toast/Single bread slices

Thin slices of bread, i.e. plain toast, will lift mid-cook or cause uneven browning. The results will be dry and crumbly.

4. Loose, leafy greens

Spinach, kale and microgreens are not ideal for air fryers as the air circulation will blow them around. This will cause them to stick to heating elements, burn or cook unevenly.

5. Large, bone-in cuts of meat

Whole chickens, pork shoulders and beef roasts are too big and will obstruct the airflow, making it hard for heat to circulate evenly. This leads to undercooked centres, dry edges, and overall inconsistent results.

6. Wet batter

Tempura or beer-battered fish is an air fryer nightmare. They tend to drip off before having a chance to crisp, leading to pooling at the bottom, excess smoke, and greasy, uneven cooking.

Instead, try using breadcrumbs, panko, or frozen, pre-breaded options.

7. Baked Goods

Baking from scratch is not ideal for air-frying cupcakes, muffins, or cakes. The high heat and rapid airflow often cause the outside to brown/burn before the inside is cooked thoroughly.

The top-down heating method and limited space will lead to cry centres, uneven bakes, and cracked tops.

8. Uncoated cheese

Uncoated cheese is any cheese that isn't battered, breaded, or wrapped. Soft or shredded varieties like mozzarella tend to melt too quickly, ooze through the basket, or slide off their base entirely.

This can damage your appliance and leave a scorched mess.

9. Liquids, soups, saucy stews

Like wet batter, these are not suited for air frying. They can splatter or evaporate quickly, causing steam to build up and causing interference with the machine's fan or heating element.

This is messy at best and a potential electrical hazard at worst.

10. Overly greasy food

Fat in foods like bacon pools at the bottom of the basket, leading to smoke and fires. Splattering grease can also damage the heating element.
