Carletonville taxi drivers face hefty fines for hygiene

The Carletonville United Taxi Association has shared a list of various offences with fines of up to R3,000.

Taxis are notorious for making up their own rules on the road, often leaving other drivers dodging chaos.
It’s become a running joke across the country because if you know, you definitely know.
Of course, there are exceptions. Some taxi drivers take pride in their work and play by the rules.

TimesLive and other sources have reported that the Carletonville United Taxi Association issued a notice to its drivers in April.
The notice includes a list of offences that, if committed by drivers, will result in steep fines.
From hygiene to outfits, see the list below.
Drivers who:
- swear at passengers will be fined R1,500 and suspended for six months;
- assault passengers will face suspension;
- assault another driver will be fined R500;
- cheat passengers will be fined R1,500 and suspended for six months;
- refuse to go to Southgate will be fined R650;
- wear shorts and vests will be fined R300;
- are drunk on duty will be fined R1,500;
- are caught drinking alcohol at the taxi rank will be fined R3,000;
- operate a taxi with no number plate will be fined R1,500;
- refuse to report to the office will be fined R500;
- hire another driver without authorisation will be fined R1,500;
- do not maintain proper hygiene will be fined R1,500.
A dirty taxi will also not be allowed to load passengers, but management will be fined R500 if it is allowed.

Touch Mathebula, spokesperson for the Carletonville United Taxi Association, told TimesLive that the list was based on complaints and driver behaviour.
He also mentioned that it is the first time a notice like this has been issued and that it was well received by drivers and operators.
