News24 has reported that the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) plans to table these plans at the city's council meeting in August 2025.

According to various sources, the documents propose the sale of the Botanical Gardens, Marks Park, Pirates Sports Club, Zoo Lake, Field and Study Recreational Centre, Melrose Bowling Club, and Killarney Country Club.

If the plan is approved, these areas will be sold to private developers who aim to build housing and commercial properties.

The motion for public participation was set to be tabled at the 25 June council meeting, but due to Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu being voted out, other business took a backseat.

News24 also states that the motion seems to contain major inconsistencies, including discrepancies in pricing, erf sizes, and whether the properties were to be leased, sold, or transferred for housing.

Since the news broke, the JPC has released a video on social media to address the backlash.
