The Duke of Sussex is said to have spoken to his uncle, Charles Spencer, about possibly taking his late mother, Princess Diana's, surname, Spencer.

According to the Daily Mail, Prince Harry had explored different ways of adopting his mother's surname.

The 40-year-old allegedly discussed this with Princess Diana’s youngest brother, the 9th Earl Spencer, during a visit to the UK.

According to PEOPLE, his uncle advised him against changing his surname, as the legal challenges would be insurmountable.

"They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step," a friend of Prince Harry's was quoted as saying.

Changing his surname would have meant that Harry would have to abandon Mountbatten-Windsor, which he also shares with his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Neither the Duke of Sussex nor Charles Spencer has responded to queries surrounding this.

Although the family now uses Sussex as their last name, Harry and his children’s official documents state their surname as Mountbatten-Windsor.

Mountbatten-Windsor

The name Mountbatten actually comes from Prince Philip’s side of the family. Back in 1947, when he became a British citizen and joined the Royal Navy, the Greek prince chose Mountbatten as his surname according to the Royal families official website.

On the flip side, Windsor became the royal family’s surname way back in 1917, thanks to King George V.

Then, in 1960, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip decided that their descendants would carry the surname Mountbatten-Windsor but only when a surname was required.
