Checkers is piloting South Africa's first smart shopping trolley, the Xpress Trolley, ushering in a new era of retail that emphasises convenience and control.

This isn't some robotic trolley or cart with a screen; it's a mobile command centre designed to streamline your shopping trip from start to finish.

It seems that the Shoprite Group has been leading the pack in retail innovation for some time, and now they've done it again.

What is the Xpress Trolley?

It enables customers to:

  • Scan and bag items as they shop.
  • Live track the running total of their purchases.
  • Skip checkout queues entirely by paying directly from the trolley.
  • Receive personalised promotions based on their Xtra Savings profile.
  • Use an interactive touchscreen to access product info and in-store navigation.

Customers scan their Xtra Savings card, use the provided bags, and scan each item before placing it in the trolley.

When the customer is done shopping, they pay via the bank card linked to their Sixty60 profile, print the till slip, and exit through a dedicated lane.

How and when is it rolling out?

The initial testing began with employees and a select number of customers at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell and Checkers Constantia, with 10 trolleys per store.

While this is the first of its kind in SA, similar innovations can be found worldwide.

Now, South Africa is also stepping into the world of seamless multi-channel shopping.

This isn't just a fun toy; it also has important benefits, including:

  • No queues or re-bagging at tills.
  • Faster and more accurate in-store picking for Sixty60 delivery staff.
  • Improved budgeting and transparency for shoppers.
