WATCH: South African "creates" local version of 'Grand Theft Auto'

What would it look like if one of the most iconic games were set in SA?

The first ever 'Grand Theft Auto' was released in 1997, and the narrative followed a criminal working their way up in the underworld by completing jobs and assignments.

Over the years, the game became one of the most successful in the industry, and now fans are anxiously awaiting the (constantly delayed) release of 'Grand Theft Auto VI'.

While it might be a while before gamers can roam the new streets of Vice City, for now, they can see what it would look like being a Robin Hood-esque figure in 'Egoli City', 'Union Capital' and 'Cape Vice'.

Yes, these are the South Africanised versions of 'Grand Theft Auto' locations in the parody video created by Koben Hofmeyr.

The SA version of the game references many proudly SA things with its witty humour and subtle changes, including a delivery service called 'Checked 50/50', the systems being offline and 'Counter Mountain'.

The trailer opens with the unofficial South African anthem 'Sister Bettina' playing in the background and the "hero" wearing a Springbok shirt.

While entertaining and hilarious, this trailer also hits home by mentioning corruption, inequality and resistance.

Unfortunately, you will be waiting much longer to play this version than an actual Rockstar Games product...
