The cost of groceries has increased by a staggering 680% since 1995…

It is no secret that food costs have increased excessively over the past few years, but how much has it increased?
According to BusinessTech, grocery costs have increased by 680% in the last three decades, almost double the 384% inflation rate increased during the same period.

Based on their findings, a typical middle-income South African grocery basket consisting of 15 staple items costs R82.68.
Today, that same grocery basket costs around R644.85.
These findings are based on archived records by Stats SA for 1995 versus grocery costs at South Africa’s leading grocery retailers in 2024.
Notably, the items that have seen the biggest increase include eggs, cooking oil, butter, white bread, and chicken; all increasing more than double the inflation rate of this time.
The most shocking item, however, was eggs, which increased by a staggering 1,079%.
