The popular instant messaging app WhatsApp has raised its minimum system requirements, disabling its function on several older Apple and Android smartphones.

According to the Times of India, this change was initially set to be implemented on May 5 but was delayed to give users more time to prepare.

WhatsApp's new minimum system requirements mean that devices with older operating system versions will no longer be able to support the app.

For Apple users, WhatsApp will now require iOS 15.1 or later. For Android users, version 5.1 or higher is required.

Due to this, models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z1, and others, have lost support.

WhatsApp's update aims to enhance security and performance; unfortunately, older devices will not be able to support the new app features.

The iPhone models that will be affected include:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

Other models, such as the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE, were reportedly also mentioned, but these can run iOS 15.8.4, the latest supported version.
