Updated | By Jacaranda FM
A hippo that was roaming the streets of Fourways is alive and back safely in its natural habitat, contrary to claims of otherwise doing the rounds on social media.

The Gauteng Agriculture Department has confirmed that the roaming hippo has gone back to its original habitat, Hartbeespoort Dam.

This follows pictures of a hippo being slaughtered circulated on social media on Monday. These posts claimed that it was the Fourways hippo. However, the rumours have been disputed by the agricultural department.
Earlier this month, the department urged residents to report the whereabouts of the hippo roaming the Fourways area. It was believed to be roaming near the Jukskei River.

According to the reports, the department discovered the hippo with the assistance of the technology used by the Endangered Wildlife Trust. The two organisations are currently thoroughly monitoring the animal's movements.
