The
opening of the Vaal Dam sluice gates causes issues downstream.

Over the past few weeks, the heavy rains have filled the Vaal Dam to the brink, and the sluice gates had to be opened to let some of the water out.

People who live in the area say that the dam hasn’t been this full in almost a decade.
After the gates were opened, the immense amount of water caused some flooding downstream, cutting some holidays short.

The nearby resorts had to be evacuated due to flooding, with one resident saying: “But these past days has been the first time I have seen it flood to this extent”.
