Healthy ideas for Family Wellness Month

Healthy ideas for Family Wellness Month

Amid the hustle and bustle of our busy lifestyles, we should always make time to focus on the health and well-being of our entire family.

A recent study found that, on average, South Africans sleep around seven hours and 31 minutes.

The study focused on sleep duration in conjunction with the quality of health.

While there wasn't a clear connection between sleep deprivation and unhealthiness,  experts always stress that sleep plays a vital role in our overall well-being.

So, exercise, engage in mental health routines, practice mindfulness, spend quality time with family, and even spend time alone.

May is Family Wellness Month. The month highlights the importance of caring for our mental and physical wellness.

You can improve your overall wellness by engaging in exercises that help with your physical and psychological well-being and eating a well-nourished diet.

1. Focusing on oneself can bring families closer together

It might not seem so, but when you take care of yourself, you also care for your family. By being healthy so you can be there for them, your efforts encourage them to lead a healthier lifestyle. Overall, this works out for everyone, not just because you live well, but also because it saves you from medical emergencies.

Set aside time to do self-fulfilling activities together. Take a cooking class, a yoga session, a guided meditation, or plan a family DIY project. This will help create an environment for learning and communication and foster a positive space for growth.

2. Plan family fun days

This could be monthly if you want to include the larger part of the family, or weekly for a smaller family unit. It is a great way to check in with the family while having fun.

We can get swept up in our busy lives from time to time. Instead of letting that rule our lives, focus on ways to get the family together. A weekly hike or family soccer game is also a nice tradition.

3. Family counselling

People always associate counselling or therapy with something negative. It's a stigma slowly fizzling away as people realise that speaking to a professional can have many benefits.

Focusing on wellness means finding the tools to do better with your family. So, instead of focusing on how your mother always makes you feel bad about yourself without meaning to, why not address it in a neutral setting? A setting that will allow you and your family to grow and unlearn the bad habits causing generational trauma.
