If there is one thing we can all be sure of, it's that crime doesn't discriminate.

CCTV footage that was shared on the Arrive Alive social media page showed how an unsuspecting motorist was the target of an attempted hijacking.

The motorist was travelling on Bird Street, Mayfair, Johannesburg, when another vehicle overtook the blue SUV and stopped. The motorist's quick thinking potentially saved them from becoming a victim in the attempted hijacking.

The hijackers used the element of surprise to try to catch the motorist off guard, but luckily, this didn't end horrifically.

While many safety and security features could help you avoid becoming a victim of vehicle crime, the best bet, according to the Arrive Alive team, is staying vigilant.

Motorists may act out of anger when involved in vehicle crime; some have even been known to blame car manufacturers. But at the basis of everything, each motorist is responsible for securing their vehicle and the goods inside.

"For instance, do not park in a dark area with limited traffic and no lights. While you may have an alarm and even a motion sensor, criminals have been found to break open body panels to cut battery power or alarm wires and it is challenging for any manufacturer to fully protect a car against a committed criminal with a crowbar and no concern for the damage he causes.

At the same time, it is essential to hide any personal items of value out of sight of prying eyes," cautions Arrive Alive.
