Rent-a-man service in Japan offers women emotional support
Updated | By Jacaranda FM/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Would you ever consider hiring someone to provide you with company when you are feeling lonely?

It’s not exactly common practice to hire someone to keep you company in South Africa – such an arrangement might easily be misinterpreted in our land of the free and presumptuous.
In Japan, however, women can hire a man purely for emotional support – even to wipe a tear or two while watching a movie together.
While this profession isn't as popular as you might assume, it aligns with Japan’s growing trend of unique therapy and companionship services.
According to Japan Explores, "Other services that fall part of this trend include rent-a-friend programs, cuddle cafés, and host clubs designed to offer comfort and conversation."
Feeling lonely, even when surrounded by people or connected through online forums, is more common than we admit. Sometimes, true fulfilment comes from meaningful conversations or simply being in someone’s company.
But finding someone who can offer genuine emotional support isn’t always easy. That’s why Japan has embraced the trend of hiring companionship as a service.
There’s no ambiguity – just a straightforward arrangement where both parties know exactly what to expect.
Perhaps that’s why it works so well.
