It's no secret that many South Africans are struggling to make ends meet in this economy.

Even people with decent salaries are feeling the pinch and are often left with more month at the end of their money.

One man has rattled the pot by saying that a R50,000 salary isn't enough to live a comfortable life in South Africa anymore. Shah Omar shared a video recently that got South Africans from different financial backgrounds talking.

In the video, he explains how life was much cheaper when he was growing up. Omar says as a child, he believed a salary of R50,000 would make him the rich uncle. But sadly, that's far from the reality.

While R50,000 a month may seem like a fortune to some South Africans, Omar was merely pointing out that the 'Math is not mathing'.

Omar, who started his video by saying that a R50,000 salary can't get you anything these days, says he spent R7,000 during a two to three-hour shopping trip.

He shared that the R7,000 he spent was on clothes at H&M, which was more than R2,000, and phone chargers at the iStore, which came to R3,600.

His words rang hard for many South Africans who get by with much less, with many people in the comments questioning his spending habits.

Omar defended himself, saying: "I don’t make R50k per month. The point is that R50k per month used to be my idea of a RICH man’s salary."

Here's what some had to say:

  • "Spending R7K in 1 day is crazy, some of us are trying to survive with R5K the whole month."
  • "Why shop at H&M and use Apple phones. Change of brands and you'll have more money."
  • "It’s also provincial. CPT is the worst. A decent 3-bed property in a decent area will cost you nothing less than three million. There goes 30k on a bond. Car instalment for a decent car, another 10k with insurance. School fees in a decent school for two kids are another 8- 10k. Food for a household of 4, another 10k. What about insurance, water, electricity, and other day-to-day expenses? 50k is the new survival bracket."
  • "R50k is very much fine. You're not spending R7k every time you go to the mall and if you are it's by choice coz (sic) one has the money."
  • "There is no salary that is 'enough'. It's all about your needs and wants. A person earning 5K monthly can be happier than 100K."
  • "We don't go to those shops and we're managing perfectly fine. Phones still charging body has clothes 30 rand coffee gives the same amount of caffeine total I spent 100 rand yesterday."
