If you saw someone asleep at the wheel, would you take out your phone to record them or try to help?

These days, social media often puts our moral compass to the test.

After a video surfaced showing a motorist allegedly falling asleep at the wheel, the main question on many viewers’ minds was: "How can you video them and not help stop them?"

In the video shared on TikTok by News Nexus SA, a white Toyota Corolla with GP plates is travelling on a relatively quiet road when it starts drifting between lanes.

The solid white lines indicate it's a two-way road that doesn't allow for overtaking.

The person filming the incident appears to slow down but makes no visible attempt to alert the driver.

It’s alleged that the motorist was dozing off behind the wheel, and at one point, the vehicle veers dangerously close to an oncoming taxi.

Still, there’s no audible effort to warn or assist the driver.

One person commented, "Once, I stopped a car with my car damaged my bumper, and that was the greatest decision I ever made. I was unemployed, and that guy gave me a job and fixed my car."

Another person said that it could've been a drunk driver, but speculating gets us nowhere.

  • "What was the better, safer option: alerting the person or recording?"

  • "Poor guy. Maybe it was something medically related. What happened at the end, though? You can’t just post this snippet. Is he ok?"

  • "All that people care about these days is content. A person can die while people are just there taking content."

In situations like this, the responsible thing to do is to try to get the driver's attention. If that’s not possible, report the vehicle to the authorities immediately.

Either way, lives are at stake – the driver’s, yours, and everyone else on the road.

That's something to think about the next time you prioritise content over safety.
