Having a drive-thru liquor shop always seemed too good to be true for alcohol lovers. Besides the red tape around the idea, it sounded like something that might never be lawfully authorised.

However, a social media video first shared in January 2024 and again more recently shows a drive-thru Shoprite Liquor. While it's the first time we have seen something of this nature, many social media users have reported seeing drive-thru liquor shops in Krugersdorp and Rustenberg.

We got in touch with the Shoprite group, and this is what they had to say:

"We acquired the drive-thru LiquorShop in Hammanskraal in 2021, and it is the only one in South Africa that we own and operate. It operates under a retail liquor licence and adheres to standard trading hours."

The video left many South Africans intrigued by the idea.

Of course, most of them voted 'yes' for the concept as it saves them time from having to walk into a store, but many said they prefer shopping in a traditional liquor store so they could try out new products on the market.

Others were unhappy with the concept, saying it promotes drinking and driving. However, this view doesn't have a solid grounding because there's no guarantee that someone walking into a liquor store will only drink that liquor when they are not driving...
