Pro tip when cooking fish – if the fish jumps off the counter, it's not cooked.

Cooking can feel overwhelming, especially when it feels as though you're navigating the kitchen without a map.

But with the right guidance, anyone can master it. A great place to start is with fish – often considered one of the easiest yet trickiest dishes to prepare, no matter the recipe.

Many say fish is simple to cook because it requires little time, but the challenge lies in getting it just right.

Without a few essential techniques, you might end up with undercooked fish (which is fine if that’s what you like) or a rubbery, overcooked disaster.

A woman recently gave us an unexpected cooking lesson – the first step in preparing fish is making sure it's no longer alive.

She likely had no idea the fish she was working with was still moving until after marinating and prepping it for a meal. It's safe to say, however, the surprise gave her the shock of her life.

It seems fish are taking matters into their own fins. In another surprising video, a group of cats can be seen nibbling on a fish in a bowl. At first, it appeared lifeless, until it suddenly made its move.

The lesson here? Always make sure your fish isn’t alive before eating… even when enjoying sushi.
