A man who attempted a robbery found out- the hard way -that it's not a good idea to target a professional fighter.

Polyana Viana - a UFC strawweight - handed out a well-deserved beating to the man who attempted to steal her cellphone in Rio de Janeiro over the weekend. Viana was approached in front of her apartment while she was waiting for a taxi, but the thief would soon discover that he picked the wrong target.

The Brazilian strawweight told AOL: "When he saw I saw him, he sat next to me. He asked me the time, I said it, and I saw he wasn't going to leave."

"So, I already moved to put my cell phone in my waist. And then he said, 'Give me the phone. Don't try to react, because I'm armed'. Then he put his hand over [what he claimed to be a gun], but I realised it was too soft. He was really close to me. So I thought, 'If it's a gun, he won't have time to draw it.' So I stood up. I threw two punches and a kick. He fell, then I caught him in a rear-naked choke," she added.

Vianna then sat him down and told him that they will wait for the police.

The 26-year-old also explained that the thief was taken to the emergency room to get his wounds treated before heading to the police station.

Viana has won 10 of her 12 professional fights, and is well known for finishing off opponents quickly - with most of her victories in the ring coming via submission.
