Pupil takes teacher's car on a joyride

A school fundraising event ended in disaster when a pupil crashed the teacher's car...

What's school without making a few fun memories to speak about, right? While it may be fun to reminisce over one's school days, there's a clear line between being playful and messing with the law.
A Grade 11 learner from Vaalharts Combined School in the Northern Cape allegedly decided to take a teacher's car on a joyride during a school fundraising event.
Things ended dismally as the pupil reportedly crashed the car in a water canal, causing significant damage to the vehicle, including to the radiator, gearbox, and chassis.

El-Zané Du Plessis, the teacher whose car was involved in the incident, is a foundation phase educator at the school. Du Plessis wanted to assist in the sports day car wash, which the Grade 11 learners hosted.
She allegedly left her car keys in the vehicle so the pupils could clean her vehicle thoroughly, but it seems the students had other ideas.
The student in question was said to have driven "the car at high speed, nearly hitting a woman and child before crashing into a ditch. Moreover, this student had a history of reckless behaviour, having driven another teacher’s car through town just the day before." (Bona magazine)
According to Bona, Du Plessis's situation does not look great.
"The student callously remarked that even if she sued him, his parents’ unemployment would mean she’d only receive R20 a month in compensation."
Social media users say they wouldn't trust learners as much.
