Elephants are considered majestic creatures worldwide, especially in countries with prominent Hinduism and Buddhism.

One elephant that has earned a name for himself is called 'Raja'. Raja is a 40-year-old elephant who has become a celebrity in Sri Lanka, known as the 'tax-collecting' elephant.

While most motorists approaching a toll gate might search for loose change, motorists using the Buttlala-Kataragama road, which links Sri Lanka’s west and southeast coasts, must reach for a worthy snack instead.

Raja is known for his innovative efforts in searching for food. He stands at the side of the road and then walks to the centre of the roadway when he notices a promising vehicle approaching.

"The clever elephant does not stop every vehicle. He has realised that larger vehicles and buses have the most to offer, so he tends to block those. Once the vehicle stops, he gently pokes his trunk in through a door or window to ask for the toll." (Explorers Web)

What's the toll fee? A snack worthy of a four-ton elephant.

His behaviour has earned him celebrity status, and many travellers buy fruits and snacks before setting off on their journey, preempting the possibility of encountering the great Raja.

"Seventy per cent of the population in Sri Lanka are Buddhist, and many others practice Hinduism. Elephants are deeply respected within both religions." (Explorers Web)
