New app allows you to buy food at a discount
Refreshi is the answer to reducing food waste and helping families with the rising cost of living.
Rising food costs are causing people to struggle, and some are barely able to feed their families.
Refreshi is a new app that recently launched, letting people buy surplus food from retailers and restaurants at a discounted rate.
"Every day, 20 million South Africans go to bed hungry, yet nearly 10 million tonnes of food are wasted annually. Refreshi is a platform that connects surplus food from grocery stores, coffee shops, bakeries and restaurants with consumers at discounted prices" reports the company website.
This model, which aims to reduce food wastage while also helping communities engage in sustainable living, has been transformational for people in Europe and North America.
Refreshi launched earlier this year in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, where they connected with students and communities so they could get affordable meals while helping businesses reduce food waste.
"Starting with coffee shops, bakeries, and supermarkets, our plan is to expand across South Africa by year-end, creating a ripple effect of environmental and social impact," says the company.

The app allows you to connect with select signed-up stores.
The Refreshi app has three impacts: environmental, economic, and social.
In 2020, Project Drawdown said: "Reducing food waste is the number one action you can take to help tackle climate change, by limiting the temperature rise to 2ºc by 2100."
