Three electricity savers for your home this winter

Winter doesn't just bring the cold, but also translates into a higher electricity bill.

It's wintertime, and while that means you can dust off your boots and coats, it also means the cold is here.

According to renewable energy specialist DJ Wes Reddy, this also means that our electricity bill increases. He explained that home heating is the most significant cost for homeowners around winter.

In a recent TikTok video, Reddy said: "Home heating will increase your bill by R1,000 to R1,500 extra."

During this time of year, people rely on electric blankets and heaters to keep themselves warm, which naturally uses more energy. Reddy shared some interesting tips on conserving the warmth you get from a heater and focusing your efforts on insulation.

1. Switch from bar heaters to fan heaters

Most people migrate to bar heaters during the winter months. However, these heaters only provide 'spot heating.' This means you must be right before them to feel warmth. Switching to fan heaters allows you to warm an entire room in 30 minutes, provided you close the doors. This also helps you save on your energy bill.

2. Use foam door sealers

Invest in cost-effective foam door sealers to keep cold air out of your home. These can be cut to size, meaning they can fit any size door.

3. Cover grid-style vents

If you have the old types of grid-style vents, then it's best to cover them to keep the cold air out.
