Why you should always secure your child before driving

Do you travel in your vehicle without buckling your child into a safety belt or car seat?

Travelling with kids can be stressful for some parents with younger kids, not because of the constant need to keep them entertained, but also because of their safety.

In South Africa, legislation requires anyone travelling with an infant to ensure that the child is strapped into a car seat.

While this may be a legal requitrement, we know that many South Africans don't always follow the rules of the road when travelling with infants. Many people still drive with their children unbuckled in their cars.

A video shared several times on social media has angered many online users.

The video shows how a motorist driving in the rain braked to avoid crashing into another vehicle and did not ensure a toddler was secured in a seatbelt or car seat.

When the driver slammed the brakes, the child flew from the front seat into the steering wheel. Thankfully, the driver caught the toddler in time and stopped her from hitting the windscreen.

One mother said, "Unfortunately, some kids know how to get out of their car seats. The number of times I've had to pull over to rebuckle my daughter's car seat is ridiculous."

"See what happens when u don't pay attention..? Also why isn't your child in the child seat? Basically, the owner of the video literally just posted his mistakes..."

"Mistake of parents who drive and keep child on side to get them entertained. Strict action should be taken for such negligence."

"I see parents not buckling up their kids all the time it’s so frustrating for me."
