Woolies Australia drops limited-edition hot cross buns

Imagine hot cross buns in special limited-edition flavours like Biscoff and Cinnabon... Sounds like a dream.

It's that time of year again when tradition outranks the usual desserts – hot cross buns are a firm favourite for many South Africans at Easter.
Interestingly, an article from 2019 by The Gourmet Traveller highlighted how some communities frown upon retailers selling hot cross buns outside of Easter. The article delves into the rich history behind these iconic buns.
One line that really stood out to us was, "Hot cross buns became commemorations of Good Friday, and across Christendom, the cross came to represent the crucifixion and the spices symbolised those used to embalm Jesus at his burial."
The nostalgia surrounding hot cross buns goes beyond tradition and religious significance; it’s also about the warmth and comfort they bring.
In the past, their limited availability made them even more special, but today, many bakers are happy to satisfy the craving all year round.
In the late 16th century, Queen Elizabeth banned the sale of hot cross buns except for special occasions like funerals, Good Friday, and Christmas, likely because they were seen as sacred.
If anyone was caught baking them outside these times, they had to give their buns to the poor.
This 2019 insight shared by an Australian foodie feels like a huge break from tradition, especially when you hear about two limited-edition, flavoured hot cross buns that have recently appeared in Woolworths Australia stores, causing quite a stir.
A content creator shared their experience trying the two unique flavours: Biscoff and Cinnabon.
